Emotional Perception AI Limited “EPAI,” a portfolio company of the research and investment business Time Machine Capital 2 “TMC2”, will now see fundamental issues of patentability AI technology considered by the UK Supreme Court “UKSC”. This is a massively important case for AI and the UK and European AI sectors. TMC2 is recognised as a leading company in artificial intelligence and applied neural network “ANN” technologies.

EPAI’s invention relates to training machine learning models for semantic content-based retrieval tasks. This core technology powers search-by-example and recommendation engines that can operate on large collections of files, including music, video, and medical records, without any textual metadata.

The co-inventors and joint heads of research at TMC2, Prof. Aggelos Pikrakis and Dr. Nadine Kroher, commented, “We have validated that search and recommendation systems built on top of this technology provide highly semantically relevant results that are better aligned with human perception.”

Bruce Dearling, EPAI’s patent attorney, said of the UKSC agreeing to hear this matter, “The arcane thinking that presently compromises the protection of computing technologies widely prevalent across society has been a long-term concern to many. With the UKSC being prepared to take on the issues that the EPAI cases raise can only be a good result for the U.K. and its desire to be a world-leading hub for AI. The lower courts of the U.K. do not always get it right, and we, therefore, hope that the UKSC will eventually deliver a sensible and workable solution that reflects 21st-century requirements for AI businesses, whether SMEs or international in nature.”

Dr Joe Lyske, TMC2’s co-founder, added, “Securing relevant patent rights for EPAI and TMC2 is important both to ensure the value of our products and services and to support the competitiveness of AI research in the UK and Europe.”
